After a nail-biting final day at the Augusta National McIlroy claimed victory on Sunday after seeing off Justin Rose in a tense play-off.

In doing so, McIlroy secured the missing piece in the Grand Slam puzzle that has long eluded him during his illustrious career.

By emerging victorious in all four of the sport’s major championships the 35-year-old added his name to the pantheon of golfing greats who have completed a Grand Slam, joining the likes of Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

Sunday’s victory also saw McIlroy walk away with prize money totalling $4.1million (£3.1million).

Following the event speculative reports claimed McIlroy had opted to donate his winnings to the charity Mencap NI.

McIlroy had previously worked closely with the charity, that supports those with learning disabilities in his home country, through his own charitable organisation, the Rory Foundation.

However, a statement from Grainne Close, Director of Mencap Northern Ireland clarified that the reports were ‘not accurate’ and congratulated McIlroy on his success.

It read: ‘Rory Mcilroy has been a tremendous supporter of Mencap, supporting the build of our 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren’s centre in Belfast a few years ago.

‘However, we would like to clarify that reports stating he donated winnings from a recent tournament to Mencap are not accurate.

‘We remain deeply grateful for his generosity and commitment to our cause and would like to congratulate him on his recent wins.’
