Even NFL superstars know thereās nothing quite likeĀ Friday night under the lights.
Kansas City Chiefs tight endĀ Travis Kelce, 36, surprised fans in Kansas on November 14 when he showed up at a high school football playoff game ā cheering from the sidelines like any proud teammate would.
The matchup betweenĀ Mill Valley High SchoolĀ andĀ St. James AcademyĀ was a quarterfinal thriller in the Kansas state championship series. Kelce was there to support his close friend and former Chiefs teammateĀ Anthony Sherman, who now serves as an assistant coach for St. James.
Local reporterĀ Matt FosterĀ shared a photo of Kelce bundled up on the sidelines, standing shoulder to shoulder with another familiar face āĀ former Chiefs tight end Blake Bell.
āGot to love seeing Travis Kelce supporting Kansas high school football,ā one fan wrote. āHeās as real as it gets.ā
šĀ A Tough Loss, But a Night to Remember
Despite Kelceās good-luck presence, St. James Academy narrowly fell to Mill Valley, 41ā38, in what fans called one of the most intense games of the season.
Still, Kelceās appearance was the highlight of the night ā especially for young players who couldnāt believe they were sharing the field (almost) with an NFL legend.
āYou could feel the energy shift when he walked in,ā one spectator toldĀ The Kansas City Star.Ā āEvery kid out there wanted to play their best for him.ā
šĀ A True Fan of the Game
Kelceās love for high school football runs deep. Earlier this year, he was spotted training with two young athletes in Georgia, offering tips and motivation during the Chiefsā offseason.
āGot some good work in with Travis Kelce this past week,ā wrote wide receiverĀ Jazz Lewis, son of NFL great Jamal Lewis. āLearned a lot from the Super Bowl legend.ā
Itās a reminder that for all his fame, Kelce hasnāt forgotten where his journey began ā as a hungry teenager chasing dreams under the stadium lights ofĀ Cleveland Heights High SchoolĀ in Ohio.
ā¤ļøĀ From Date Nights to Sideline Support
Kelceās surprise football appearance also came just days after a whirlwind week of romance with fiancĆ©eĀ Taylor Swift. The couple was spotted onĀ two back-to-back date nightsĀ in New York City ā first atĀ The Polo Bar, then at the exclusiveĀ Zero BondĀ club, where they were photographed holding hands and laughing as they entered.
Now, as the Chiefs prepare to face theĀ Denver BroncosĀ on November 16, Kelce is back in game mode ā but not before proving once again that heās the kind of superstar who never forgets his roots.
āThatās Travis,ā a source close to the Chiefs said. āFame hasnāt changed him ā he still shows up for his people.ā
