Jack Nicklaus Called Inferior to Tiger Woods by Top Coach, Causing Huge Fight in Golf Community

Tiger Woods vs. Jack Nicklaus… It’s a debate that left the community divided for more than a decade. Two of the greatest golfers in the history of the sport are led by their marvelous records. No one has even come close to what either of them achieved during their illustrious careers. That is why Woods and Nicklaus still stand at the pinnacle of golf many years after either of them won their last trophies. Both are commonly referred to as GOATs, but who is truly the greatest golfer ever? Tiger Woods’s 82 titles give him an edge over Jack Nicklaus’s 73 wins. The Golden Bear’s 18 majors overshadow Mr. T’s 15. Woods’s 281 weeks as world no. 1 are unbelievable, but Nicklaus didn’t have world rankings during his time, or he might have also been high up there. It’s hard to settle the debate with simple statistics. Even when it comes to gameplay, the Ohio native was excellent at putting, but Mr. Jupiter was also a great finisher of the game.

Both have had iconic moments in golf, and their records prove the same. Hence, it’s impossible to judge who is the best of the best in the history of golf. Yet, everyone has always debated over it. And that has often led to a strong reaction from the other side. Lou Stagner started another row about the two legends with his latest tweet. He provided a long explanation that began with Jack Nicklaus was a great champion. No doubt. The best of HIS time. But he played in an era with significantly weaker, shallower fields. Back then, there was very little money in professional golf. That meant fewer elite athletes chose golf as a career. Many top amateurs never turned pro because the financial upside just wasn’t there.” He is not wrong, as the golden era of golf only had a few challengers for the likes of Jack Nicklaus, such as Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, and Tom Watson.

Stagner also had something to say about Tiger Woods, Tiger Woods, on the other hand, competed in, and dominated, the deepest, most talented fields the game had ever seen. He didn’t just benefit from the growth of the game, he caused it. Tiger attracted global talent, massive sponsorship, and turned golf into a sport that elite athletes actually wanted to pursue.” Woods did have a far more diverse field to play against. The courses he played on were also far more challenging, as golf courses before were just a few, and golf was seen more as a casual sport as compared to now. Stagner went on to provide more information in favor of Tiger Woods. However, all he ended up doing was starting a debate in the comments section.

Fans of both players jumped in to share their pieces in support of their favorite player. Let’s see what they had to say.

Internet goes berserk in another Tiger Woods vs. Jack Nicklaus debate

There was certainly a huge difference between Jack Nicklaus’s era as compared to Tiger Woods’s prime. But saying that the Golden Bear had played against a “significantly weaker” field didn’t sit well with some of the fans. As one of them stated, “I don’t think that line of reasoning applies. During Nicklaus heyday you had Palmer, Casper, Player, Charles, Trevino, Weiskopf, Miller, Jacklin, Watson, Ballesteros, Norman, Lema, DeVicenzo and the rest.” Either of these players had the potential to be at the top. For instance, Palmer and Player had 7 and 9 major titles to their name, respectively, which is still considered to be a huge number. So Nicklaus’s opponents were certainly quite challenging.

Another fan agreed with what Stagner had to say. And they put it in one simple way, “the best way to explain this is – if you had to pick one golfer to win a golf tournament in order to save your life… EVERYONE is picking tiger woods.” Woods did know how to win, and in the end, that is what golf is about.

There are multiple factors that go into this debate. One of them is the equipment that both of them used. As one fan pointed out, “Umm equipment was way different..Your God Tiger couldn’t hit those clubs nor could anyone on Tour these days..your analysis is shit!” The kind of clubs Jack Nicklaus played with were indeed a lot inferior to what Tiger Woods had at his disposal. With time, the design and quality of the equipment got much better, and Mr. T had the best kit in his time to dominate the field.

Another fan decided to consider every aspect as far as player development goes. They commented, “Not even close. Jack’s success using wood drivers and less than pristine conditions, practice facilities, technology demonstrated the purest and best golfer of all time. Jack. Period.” Golf as a sport has evolved quite a lot over the years. Woods made optimum use of the best technology available to be the best player of his time. Unfortunately, Nicklaus didn’t have as many options during the 60s, making the sport a little harder in terms of technicality than it is now.

However, Jack Nicklaus himself had once admitted that he had it easy during his time. One of the fans shed light on it as they commented, Jack knew he was a big fish in a small pond. 1994 interview from Golf Magazine. ‘We only had 10 guys to beat, and we knew if we beat those guys we’d win tournaments. Hell’s bells, the guys today have about a hundred to beat!’” If the 73x PGA Tour winner also believes that Woods is better, then who are we to debate about it?
