Fabrizio Romano may have just brought Liverpool closer to securing Alexander Isak
Liverpool appears to be edging nearer to signing Alexander Isak following an intriguing update from Newcastle.
It is clear that Liverpool’s primary striker target this summer is Alexander Isak from Newcastle.
The tall Swede excelled against most opponents in the Premier League last season, establishing himself as one of the top strikers in the league after his time at Real Sociedad.
His collaboration with Anthony Gordon for Eddie Howe’s squad was exceptional, contributing significantly to the goals and assists that helped the Magpies qualify for the Champions League once again.
Liverpool has expressed considerable interest in both players, but with Newcastle imposing a substantial price tag on Isak, it seemed that a transfer was unlikely this summer.
That was until Fabrizio Romano provided his latest insights on Newcastle’s transfer intentions.
Newcastle is now ‘keen’ on acquiring Hugo Ekitike this summer.
Hugo Ekitike is another highly coveted striker this summer.
The French forward had a standout season with Eintracht Frankfurt during the 2024-25 campaign, with the Bundesliga club valuing him at approximately £85 million.
According to a recent report from Romano, it appears that the Magpies have entered the competition for the forward.
“Hugo Ekitike continues to draw interest from the Premier League, with Newcastle eager to sign the striker,” he stated on his personal X account.
“Several other Premier League clubs are also updated on the situation, following inquiries from Liverpool and Chelsea in June.
“Al Hilal and Al Qadsiah have made calls in recent weeks, but his preference remains in Europe.”
If Newcastle secures Hugo Ekitike, Liverpool will have one less striker option to pursue.
Ever since it was reported that Ekitike would be available for transfer this summer, Liverpool has been among the leading candidates for his signing.
Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea is yet another Premier League team that has been strongly associated with the French player. However, with the recent acquisitions of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, there seems to be little necessity for them to pursue his signing.
One of the key positions that Slot must strengthen this summer is the striker role, particularly if Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz decide to leave Anfield in the coming weeks.
Naturally, only time will reveal what the future holds, but if Newcastle successfully signs Ekitike, it may pave the way for the Reds to target Isak.
