Rory McIlroy and his Boston Common team missed out on the TGL post-regular season playoffs on Monday night, after they were defeated 10-6 by New York Golf Club

Rory McIlroy is already looking ahead to a second TGL season with Boston Common, after his team were eliminated from the league’s maiden campaign on Monday.

McIlroy – who is one of TGL’s co-founders alongside Tiger Woods – saw his team lose a fifth-straight match, this time against New York Golf Club after they were beaten 10-6 by Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele and Matt Fitzpatrick. It will have been a huge disappointment to McIlroy, having played such a huge role in helping get the league of the ground.

Speaking post-match on Monday evening though, the Northern Irishman is ready and raring to get another opportunity to bounce back in 2026. “I’d certainly want to run it back next year,” McIlroy declared.

“I really enjoyed competing with these guys. But yeah, the nice thing is that Keegan and I especially live very close to here, so we can hopefully pop in whenever we want and get a little bit of extra practice going into next year.” It is a whistle-stop season for TGL, whose fixtures run from January into March.

Despite the short stint on the schedule, McIlroy believes it is a strong addition to the golfing year. “I think that’s the cool thing about this, as well, is you’ve got the semifinals in a couple weeks’ time and then the final and then it’s gone for nine months,” he added. “Hopefully by the time January rolls around again, people are excited to watch it.

“After the next few weeks, we’ll let the major championship season kick in and obviously have people be super interested in that, but January, February, March when there’s not a ton going on at nighttime, especially up in the northeast, I think it’s a fun thing for people to be able to sit down and watch on a Monday and Tuesday night.”

McIlroy has played alongside Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama throughout the season, but the Boston setup manage to register just one point in five matches despite a star-studded squad. Whilst their opening year has been a struggle, McIlroy’s teammate Bradley is also looking forward to returning next season.

“We wanted to win the match [against New York], and we’ve run up against some good play on the other side, but we had the best time this year,” said Bradley. “I had a blast coming in and doing the practices, practice rounds. Had a blast the whole year and look forward to next year, and hopefully we can win one match next year. That would be nice.

“It was really a fun time and really excited about TGL’s future.” Alongside McIlroy and Boston, his co-founder Woods and his Jupiter Links team were also eliminated following New York’s victory. The New York franchise will join Atlanta Drive, The Bay and Los Angeles in the playoffs, which get under way later this month.
